The Battle of Mt. Augustus

Mt Augustus used to support a rich tapestry of largely unstudied life north east of Westport in the South Island, including the snail Powelliphanta augustus. Sadly, in spite of bitter opposition from numerous environmental groups Solid Energy was allowed to destroy this area and this unique snail now faces extinction. Read more.

The High Court has today determined that the state coalminer, Solid Energy, must apply to both the Ministers of Conservation and Energy for permission to clear and mine the only remaining habitat of the endangered giant land snail Powelliphanta ‘Augustus’ on the Stockton Plateau, north east of Westport.

Protesters sleep on coal company lawn

Five Save Happy Valley Coalition members camped on the front lawn of state-owned coal miner Solid Energy's Christchurch headquarters last night. Around 30 protesters helped set up a pup tent on the lawn at 2.00pm yesterday, as a response to the removal of a long-term occupation camp on the site of a proposed West Coast coal mine.

Save Happy Valley Will Fight On

Save Happy Valley Coalition members will today resurrect their occupation camp on Solid Energy's front lawn in Christchurch after Solid Energy and police yesterday removed the long-term occupation camp from Happy Valley and said the public will now be excluded from a 480 hectare zone.
