I am concerned that Solid Energy has been allowed to proceed with its proposal for an opencast coal mine in Happy Valley on the West Coast.

Please stop this mine and:

Demonstrate New Zealand's commitment to endangered species. Happy Valley is a pristine area, and an important home to the great spotted kiwi and twelve other threatened species.
Reduce our contribution to worsening climatic conditions. Use of the coal from this mine will produce 12 million tonnes of climate changing carbon dioxide.
Protect the West Coast environment from river pollution, acid mine drainage and groundwater pollution. Solid Energy has a shocking environmental record, as shown by the state of the Stockton mine.
