Message:

Dear Mr Mallard,

I urge the Government to stop Solid Energy's proposed Cypress Mine in Happy Valley on the WEst Coast.

This opencast coal mine would:

  • Destroy endangered species and their habitat. The great spotted kiwi, the endemic land snail Powelliphanta patrickensis, magnificent red tussock, pygmy pine, southern rata and many other species live within the 256ha mine footprint.
  • Cause further acid mine drainage and environmental degradation on the West Coast. Solid Energy has a shocking environmental track record.
  • Extract 5 million tonnes of coal. When burnt, this would release 12 million tonnes of climate changing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The Government is responsible for Solid Energy, and the Government must direct them not to proceed. Thus, I call on you, as Minister of State Owned Enterprises, to ensure that the mine in Happy Valley does not go ahead.
