Message:

Dear Mr Carter,

I am concerned about Solid Energy's proposed opencast coal mine in Happy Valley on the West Coast.

Happy Valley is a

  • Pristine area of native bush, fragile wetlands and a thriving ecosystem, low in predators.
  • Natural refuge for great spotted kiwi.
  • Habitat to kiwi and the endemic land snail Powelliphanta patrickensis, both absolutely protected under the Wildlife Act 1953.
  • Habitat to many other endangered native plant and animal species.

It is unacceptable that a State Owned Enterprise is considering destroying this area. As Minister of Conservation, you are responsible for protecting endangered species wherever they are.

I urge you to stop Solid Energy from proceeding with a mine in Happy Valley. I look forward to your prompt response on this matter.
